Teen Leadership Summer Camp in New Jersey | Counselor in Training Program

Your Camper's Next Great Chapter Starts Here

After registering, prospective CITs complete a short application including references - their first step toward becoming a leader.

For many Fairview Lake campers, CIT is the summer they've been working toward without even knowing it. After years of growing up at camp, making friends, trying new things, and discovering who they are, entering 11th grade brings a new question: what's next? The Counselor in Training program is the answer.

Over six weeks, CITs step out of the camper role and into something bigger. They work alongside experienced counselors, mentor younger campers, lead activities, and earn 210 community service hours, all while living the camp experience they love in a whole new way. It's the summer that turns great campers into great leaders. New to Fairview Lake? You're welcome here too.

Structured daily lessons in communication, teamwork, decision-making, and time management, taught by experienced camp professionals.

Hands-On Mentorship

CITs work directly alongside counselors, helping plan and lead activities for younger campers every day. Real responsibility from day one.

210 Community Service Hours

One of the most significant service hour opportunities available to high school juniors anywhere in New Jersey. Every hour is documented and verifiable for college applications.

American Red Cross Certifications

CITs have the opportunity to earn American Red Cross certifications during their six weeks, including the Lifeguard certification for those who qualify. Additional ARC certification opportunities may be available based on program scheduling.

Where You'll Live

CITs live in breezy screened cabins tucked into a wooded area of camp, separate from the younger campers they'll be mentoring. The cabins don't have electricity, but a nearby bathhouse with hot and cold running water, showers, and flush toilets is just a short walk away. This back-to-nature setting is a deliberate part of the CIT experience, encouraging personal responsibility, peer connection, and the kind of independence that defines a great leader.

What Families Are Saying

I like that a lot of thought went into the program. It was structured and had goals.

CIT Parent

CIT prepared me for being a counselor by giving me the chance to work with campers during activity periods and spend time with a cabin and see what it's like being in a leadership position. It's also a nice chance to see some friends one last time as campers and get one more year as a camper while still having that CIT training.

2025 CIT

My son had a life changing summer. He's so sad to not be there anymore and has said he'd like to go every summer he can. It was an overall incredible experience for him.

CIT Parent

I'm so glad my son completed this program. It's a personal growth opportunity and loads of fun.
