Counselor in Training
Looking for a Counselor-in-Training (C.I.T.) Program in New Jersey?
Discover a Life-Changing Leadership Experience at Our Sleepaway Camp
If you're a teen entering 11th grade and ready to grow into the leader you're meant to be, our six-week Counselor-in-Training (C.I.T.) program is your next great adventure. Taking place from June 21 to August 2 in the beautiful wilderness of New Jersey, this coed, sleepaway experience is designed to empower teens with the confidence, skills, and values that last a lifetime.
At the heart of the program is the YMCA commitment to Honesty, Caring, Respect, and Responsibility. Through daily hands-on experiences and structured leadership lessons, CITs are immersed in camp life—not just as participants, but as emerging leaders. From learning how to manage a group of younger campers to planning activities and solving real-time challenges, our CITs develop essential life skills in communication, teamwork, time management, and decision-making.
Participants have the unique chance to earn community service hours while working side-by-side with experienced counselors. You'll gain firsthand experience mentoring younger campers, leading activities, and helping shape unforgettable summer memories—all while strengthening your own sense of purpose and direction.
The journey also includes the opportunity to participate in the American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification course, giving teens a nationally recognized credential to add to their resume and opening doors to future employment in aquatic and camp settings.
CITs live in breezy, screened seasonal cabins tucked into serene wooded areas of camp. While these cabins don’t have electricity, a nearby central bathhouse offers hot and cold running water, showers, and flush toilets. This simple, back-to-nature setting encourages personal responsibility, strengthens peer connection, and adds to the magic of the camp experience.
Whether you're dreaming of one day becoming a counselor, exploring a future in youth development or education, or simply looking to stretch your leadership muscles, our CIT program offers an unforgettable summer of growth, friendship, and discovery.
